ACT TODAY to protect voting systems and your privacy.
In the last few months, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has illegally overhauled its “SAVE” system into a massive unlawful tool for performing citizenship checks that now relies on inaccurate data from the Social Security Administration and threatens millions of Americans’ voting and privacy rights.
This is an appeal from CREW: Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington about misuse of Social Security records. You have an opportunity to express your concerns directly to regulators who must vote to enact these changes. The Social Security Administration (SSA) has a formal comment period that is closing soon.
Social Security (SSA): Comment due Dec. `12:

IT IS EASY TO SUBMIT A COMMENT. Just press "Comment" on the DHS link or the green Submit a Public Comment on the SSA link (see picture above). You can submit it anonymously or include your name. You can just type into a comment box or you can write something and submit a pdf or other format (.doc, etc.). I've pasted a couple of sample comments at the end.
The rest of this post is taken from a CREW email (updated to refer to the SSA cooment that is still open): There is a related Pro Publica article linked near the end and a couple of sample comments.

In the last few months, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has illegally overhauled its “SAVE” system into a massive unlawful tool for performing citizenship checks that now relies on data from the Social Security Administration, which is sometimes inaccurate or misinterpreted and threatens millions of Americans’ voting and privacy rights.
The Trump administration's illegal creation of massive, secret systems for accessing Americans’ personal information poses serious privacy and data-security risks and threatens to wrongfully purge eligible voters from voter rolls across the country.
Due to pro-democracy groups filing a class-action lawsuit, the Social Security Administration (SSA) is seeking public input after the fact on the overhauled SAVE system. Now, we have the opportunity to tell the SSA to prevent the serious harm that is to come with the changes SSA and DHS are making.
SSA is accepting public comments until Friday, December 12th. The overhauled SAVE system is a clear attack on our privacy and threatens the right to vote, and it’s up to us to make our voices heard.
Here are a few points you could consider discussing in your comment:
- When we interact with the Social Security Administration, we only expect the citizenship information we share with SSA to be used for purposes related to benefits, retirement, disability, and death.Americans did not consent to their sensitive SSA data being repurposed by federal or state governments for use in a massive voter verification system. The government has no right to repurpose our data this way, without our consent.
- The Privacy Act protects U.S. citizens and lawful permanent residents from improper government use of their data. This consolidation of data substantially increases risk of our personal information being vulnerable to hacking or security breaches.
- These changes could wrongfully purge lawfully registered voters from voter rolls and prevent eligible voters from casting their ballot. In fact, some states have already started purging voter rolls and opening criminal cases using this system–even though this data is especially unreliable for naturalized citizens. States aren’t doing enough to confirm the database information on voter citizenship is actually right.
Submit a comment TODAY and ensure your voice is heard before the December 12th deadline.
In solidarity,
END OF CREW MISSIVE.
Here is a related the Pro Publica article. DHS has been doing this much of the year but thanks to a lawsuit by public advocacy organizations, we have a chance to register our objections.
